Backup your ezimerchant store data!
It's surprising that at least once a week we get a call from a distressed client that has had a catastrophic hard drive crash leading to total data loss. The tragedy is not the crash itself; it is the loss of data which could so easily have been avoided.
Your ezimerchant store data should be backed up every time you make any changes. The backup should be to a location other than the hard drive that ezimerchant is installed on. If you have more than one ezimerchant store, ensure you back them all up and give the backup file(s) a name that allows you to distinguish which backup is for which site. As an additional precaution it may be worthwhile to time stamp your backups so that you can go back a few days or weeks if you need to. We use the format YYYYMMDD (e.g. 20070416 for 16th April 2007) as it allows us to quickly find the appropriate version.
For a simple backup of your ezimerchant data, an ideal backup media is a USB Flash Disk. At the time of writing they were available for as little as $28.00 for a 1GB model which should be more than adequate for your ezimerchant data.
Of course your ezimerchant data won’t be the only valuable data on your machine. A more complete backup strategy would certainly be your best approach. Such a strategy usually involves some quality backup software and some external backup media (e.g. external USB Hard Drive, DVD-R, Tape or even online storage). Using external media is important for situations where data loss is caused by theft, fire or anything else that causes both your data and the backup to become unavailable. The best approach would be to use a combination of USB Hard Drive for quick backup and either DVD-R or online storage for off-site backup.
